I found this relay under the drivers seat

And I noticed that mine is missing the fuse

So my question is, what does it do, and because the fuse is missing does it mean it's not doing what ever it should be?

You will have to trace the wires to find out what it is connected to, it is only 15A rated so I doubt that it is a split charge relay. Previous owner addition so it's anyone's guess.

but am i right in thinking, that because its missing the fuse, its not doing what ever it should be?

That is where my VW fitted split-charge relay is fitted and is about the same size.

As you say.....no fuse so it won't work.
I'm guessing that if this turns out to be a split charger the fuse just keeps blowing because 15amps isn't adequate.

Would make sense if it's the split charge, as currently the 'leisure' battery is only charging via a solar panel

Will try putting a fuse in it tomorrow. Could I put a higher amp fuse in?

I don't know what people are thinking when they fit a 15amp relay, 15amp fuse, on a circuit that will often pull mid 30's amps on first start with a discharged leisure battery.
It's also rather worrying to see wiring routed through holes without grommets or at leased being taped.
Ditch the 15amp relay....fit a decent quality 40amp (as a minimum) and fuse at 30amps Check the main feed wires are also 30amp plus and it might just work.

Because you have live wires that could chafe through causing a 'dead short' to the cars bodywork with the potential to cause an electrical fire.

It was the split charge!

Leisure battery now showing 13.9v when engine running!

With the same relay & wiring.....keep a close eye on it, because as I say, it's really not man enough to be reliable.

Mine has been okay for 10 years, fitted by VW if it's good enough for them......

Mine got hot. Blew a few fuses along the way and then finally melted one and partly itself. Upgraded soon afterwards. Running the TV and Propex all night was dragging the battery right down I suspect.

Since fitting the ammeter display I have on occasion had over 50A flowing into the leisure immedistely upon start up, starts dropping pretty quick but that's still a heavy load; depends how much stick I give the leisure battery between runs in the van. I suppose another battery in tandem wouldn't go amiss, on the 'list'

Ideed....but that wasn't put there by VW! and if it had been it would have been at least a 30 not 15amp relay....wiring would also have been sleaved...and we are still talking 'minimum' requirement at that.
