I got a quote from fellowsspeedshop, and it was going to be £6500 + vat
I think that is ridiculous for doing a conversion, you can buy a van already done for near that...anybody know a specialist who would charge reasonable prices for doing a Subaru conversion for me ?? Thanks folks

like I said earlier in the post, doing it yourself is not to bad a job at all even with very little or no experience and you would be able to get all the parts including the doner care for 3k. A couple of weekends and it would be pretty much done, and believe me the first time you drive it knowing you done the install you will love it.
You dont need many tools really either, socket set / spanners/ screw drivers / clutch centering tool / grinder 1or2 trolly jacks and engine hoist is handy but not essential.
I saw a post on another thread where a bloke had changed his mind about subaru conversion and went for a recon 2.1 which cost £1800. He done 50,000 miles and it gave up the ghost. he has now done a subaru conversion and wishes he had done it in the first place. Once you have made the initial outlay it is defo more cost effective as if for whatever reason the engine did go pop you can get another for penuts and can be installed easy in a day.
and as for upgrading brakes etc, that can be done at a later date. it will only go as fast as you put your foot down, maybe the normaly aspirated would suit more

I got quoted £3700 a few years back to convert a '88 1.9DG Caravelle to Subaru by Fellows Speed Shop.
