Water coming out of exhaust.

Hi all, first post.

I have a 1989 T25 1.9 petrol engined (DG) camper which is blowing quite a lot of water out of the exhaust.

The amount coming out does seem to reduce when the engine gets warm but doesn't stop completely. There are no leaks as far as I can see, but header tank level looks like it is going down. Oil is oil coloured, no mayonnaise evident and no unusual smoke from exhaust
I can also hear muffled 'duff duff' type sounds every now and again from the engine, possibly indicating misfire.

I'm not very familiar with the WBX, but on a more conventional engine I would be assuming the head gasket had gone. If I understand correctly the 1.9 has sealing rings not a head gasket? Are these rings likely to fail? Any other possible causes of the above symptoms?

(I assume I'm looking at a winter engine rebuild..)

Water is a by-product of combustion
there's so much of it..that unless your exhaust gets really hot for a long period then it will basically fill up and keep dribbling out.
It's the reason why exhausts rot from the inside
However the fact that your header loses water, may be contributing, first check you have no leaks at any of the joins/radiator etc before condemning it.
If it was sucking water into the combustion chamber it would just as equally blow gasses out
A sniff test will determine that

I did wonder if the amount it was producing was a normal by-product, but this has only started happening a few months ago. Coupled with the misfire (which is new) and disappearing water I assumed the worse ...

Thats a good point about the sniff test, I'l see if I can arrange one.

Could try taking the silencer off and draining it
Or drill a small drain hole tailpipe end
