Is the coolant top up tank empty for a start? Have you recently emptied the coolant system and been filling it up again possibly creating an air lock? Is your coolant pump knackered/leaking? If the pump's not working then there's no circulation and no cooling.

Faulty thermostat?

Was your heater working? I believe it should work even with the thermostat closed, but it may help to narrow down the problem.

Thanks for the ideas not been drained or topped up in last two years . Heater working fine 30 degree difference in temp across the system but the rad was 15 colder than the cools side of the engine plenty of water in the system I figured thermostat aa agreed likely and offered to get us home . That's twice in one year

No no no , I posted that on an iphone in the aa truck . Second lift home off the aa last one as in a discovery back to the garage that sold it to me.
Writing this in the a4 as we tank down the m5 to resume our rudely interupted break. T25 will have to wait for a while before it gets acoat of looking at .
I waited an hour and just before the aa came to pick us up on our return from the pub I started it to get a warm. The gauge went up to 3/4 of the guage then after a few minutes dropped back to the left , then , eventually moved back to just out of the 'cold' zone. So it might be ok now? Still going to investigate though.

Latest.
All I can find is a broken wire on the glowplug sensor. Took it out yesterday drove a mile to the m53 , just coming out of the 'COLD ZONE ' got onto m53 and floored it for 6 miles temp never got above halfway. Immediatly I came up the sliproad at arrow park the temp dropped back even more. Round the roundabout and floored it all the way back. Indicated 85 on the clock on one downhill stretch , can off at vauxhalls and pulled into layby. Rad warm all over, good differential between hot and cold side of engine and fan came on after a few seconds for maybe 30 seconds.
That sounds normal to me "(except the 85mph) . Think my I will still treat it to new sensors and thermostat though. Any views?
