Going to see how tight it is and see if I can get away with an old leather belt or smilar.
I've got a new sump plug washer - putting this back seems to be the part of the process to take v carefully. As the wiki says , you can always tighten later if it leaks.
Unless you leave it so loose that it falls out and. you loose all the oil! I've never had a problem, use a ring spanner not a ratchetand, and don't go mad and swing on it, just nipped up plus a quarter of a turn.

3 fingers on the ratchet, no more ... i.e. your thumb and 3 fingers as opposed to the palm of your hand and 3 fingers Oil filter should be 'palm tight'. You'll see what I mean when you try it
Check for drippage once the engine's warmed up.

Also make sure the old rubber gasket comes off with the old oil filter they can stick on, don't ask me how I know !!
Check the sump plug before you do anything, it may be already butchered or bodged, the soft metal of the sump is a weakness and many years of big hairy ar**ed mechanics whipping it out and nipping it back up too tight over the years often means a larger sump plug may have been fitted at some point.
I had to poke a screw driver through the old oil filter , made a bit of a mess but now at least its off. I only did it hand tight so hoping I wont have the same problem next time I change.
Yep the screwdriver through it will work every time but as you saya tad messy
Glad that you got it sorted and without the need to spend money on special tools , and thank you for taking the time to post the outcome. It will help others reading this in the future. We would all like a massive range of tools but sometimes money doesn't permit so we have to be a little inventive.... I've never tried the belt trick though!
