Just as a matter of interest I was looking at this topic again when I realised that I had never posted a follow up to my comments in July. In the end I found that the filter that I had thought had been changed when I had the engine serviced had not been - therefore, a genuinely NEW filter solved the problem!!

There is no 'line into the tank' it is a metal outlet (and inlet opposite) that's a part of the tank itself. If that's really what he said your mechanic really DOES need a lie down ... under someone else's van :twisted:
