Right then guys I noticed a knock on my van a couple of weeks ago, I stripped it down and found that the cooling fan hub had warn and the wood ruff key had come out, I put it all back together with with new parts and a vw specialist helping me all went back together easy enough but and i have done about 300 miles in it and the center bolt has sheered off in the crank!! I have stripped it all down again drilled out the crank re tapped a thread put it all back together with another new wood ruff key and driven less than 10 miles and its come loose again?? all of the bolts are still tight but the fan is rocking on the wood ruff key?? I have taken it all apart again and it looks like the hole in the crank is bigger than the hole in the key way on the fan hub is this right ?? Is it worn ?? is it supposed to be a tapered wood ruff key?? I am now at a loose end and i'm going insane I don't know how to move forward cause it just keeps coming loose but im not sure if im doing something wrong i even put bearing lock on the taper and thread lock on the bolts...... Someone with some technical knowledge please help ???????
A woodruft key is normally for driving components, the width is usually the same for the shaft and the driven piece.
It sounds like the fan has come loose and battered the slots for the key in both parts. Also the fan should not 'rock' on the key, sometimes they need to be fitted/adjusted so they only fit on their width.
Hopefully the shaft is hard and has not been damaged, you might be able to fit another fan and key?
Hiya its a 2.0 CU engine the slot in the fan hub is 4mm and a key fits tight in there but loose in the crank end however the crank doesn't look like its been damaged at all it looks a1 so i'm stuck ??
