engine shrieks then cuts out

Post by infidel »

why?

I took out the engine, fixed the broken alternator bolts, replaced the exhaust and clutch, plus engine mounts. new fuel pump, plugs and leads.
re-fitted the engine.

fired up fine, considering I didn`t prime the carb.

running it up to temperature to re fill the coolant, and after about three minutes of running, I get a loud squeal and the engine stops. checked oil, all ok.
have considered water in the fuel supply, but then it would be difficult to start, surely.

I only managed to get eight litres of anti-freeze in, and it wont take anything more, no water, nothing.
rad bleed screw pumps out water, pipes are hot, cab heater works fine.

what am I not seeing?

What happens if you try and restart it?

Take the belt off and check alternator and water pump run freely shrieks can be from the belt just being wet from stray coolant and it may be a coincidence

3 mins is about a float chamber ful of fuel so could be that the fuel pump needs priming
If it wont start try chucking a table spoon or so of petrol down the carb if it fires briefly then its fuel starvation

it fires up instantly.
does not shriek on start up or when revved up.
a brand new fanbelt, but it could slip even so.
it is very damp in the engine bay so your suggestion of a wet fanbelt sounds good.
the carb float valve has given me trouble a couple of times, sticking shut.
therefore the next step will be to get a carb rebuild kit.

thanks a lot for your thoughts.
I will update you soon. :ok

I asume its a dg but what year?
Early pierburgs we discovered recently have a differernt needle valve so most rebuild kits are for the later carb

its an `83 dg.
the carb is a pierburg 2e2 with a 19mm pump jet pushrod.

I will ask baxter if the stuff he sells will do the job.

if not, there is a company called gower and lee who specialise in pierburg carb parts. very good they are.

while I am at it, when I removed the engine naturally the coolant was lost .
I flushed the engine and pipes out with a hose, and assumed that the system was virtually empty.
when re filling I could only get eight litres of coolant in, nothing else.

is this normal? if so, do I now have too much coolant?

Yes its normal to have water trapped
If you flushed it it should be just water in there
Assuming you put your neat coolant in then you now have approx 50% mix as the whole system is about 16L

Kits Brickwerks sel are for the later carb so give gowe and lee a call if you read the post in the link that's where he got his

Interested to see some pics of yours when you rebuild :ok

The squeal isn't uncommon either. Mine does it EVERY winter without fail. Pulley wheel is slightly polished and the damper air makes the belt slip. Fine in the Summer.

that's another comfort. thanks for that.
my wife had been using the van as her daily ride until recently, so it wasn`t sitting around like it is now.

I have dried off the engine bay, block, pipes and electrics, applied a sensible coating of WD, and increased the idling revs.
after a nice long trickle charge, I will give it a run this weekend.
