2.0 air cooled carbs ????

Post by Rookie lee »

Recently purchased my first van and whilst I didn't expect good fuel consumption from it I did expect a little better than I got on my first big run to bug jam at the weekend. It only has a range of 230 miles to a full tank. It running twin carbs empi manifolds and webber single chokes. I had them set up before I left, they are virtually new. Has anyone else got similar set up and what does your van do on fuel. I've just seen a single carb set up on just kampers do you know if I would see better consumption from this.
Many thanks lee

17mpg is a bit low, I can get about 21-23 mpg with the original twin solex and crappy kampers exhaust.

does seem a bit low. mid 20's for me standard day to day and on our holiday last year down to murcia we averaged 28.8mpg running standard solex setup. (although i believe they were freshly refurbed not long before i bought them). i am pretty careful on the right foot and much of the journey was on the autoroutes at a steady 50-55mph but it shows what can be acheived. no one was more shocked than me.

DO NOT, i repeat, DO NOT buy the weber single carb conversion, i think you will find that is the general consensus. i started with that and its almost undriveable however well you set it up. and come the winter months you probably wont even want to drive it. the inlet manifolds are just too long. if you want to try it out i do have one you can buy for a "small consideration" (they may be crap on a vw but they do have some value!) was just going to bang it on ebay but let me know.

I have just worked out the fuel consumption on my 2 litre petrol air cooled camper. It has standard (I think) twin solex carbs but the exhaust is a twin ??

The fuel gauge only reads down to half way so needed to know what it did. It works out to be about 16 mpg ahhhhh
I know the exhaust through one of the heat exchangers is blowing but I have done a temporary repair. I I'm seriously considering replacing both heat exchangers over the winter but need to get underneath to have a proper look to see if the exhaust is leaking anywhere else.

I didn't expect the fuel consumption to be great but expected a bit more

I've had my van since 2009. I've kept a spread-sheet of every fill-up and it has always averaged 16-18 MPG over a year's driving. On long, slow runs it has managed low to mid 20's but short trips always bring the average back down. In the time I've had it the van has had a 009 dizzie, the OEM one, has run with a missing inlet valve seat for a few months, been loaded with camping gear & empty. The only thing that has stayed constant is the MPG.
Drive slow and an LPG conversion is the only way you're going to get cheaper running costs.

dells will increase your mpg. once choke per cylinder allows for a far more precisely tuned motor. with the extra horses gained you wont be having to floor it everywhere / drop down the box on inclines etc

We have a 1982 CU engined auto Devon with a pair of Solex Brosol replacement carbs running a std VW exhaust that have been set on a rolling road still only get 19-20 mpg when driven gently.
Love the van, hate the MPG; just have to get use to it.
Any car following me must run rich due to all the un burnt petrol being pushed out the back end

Did another 3200 mile round trip to Murcia again this summer. Returned 27.6 mpg this time. Difference being the route home via Massif Central this year. Poor Doris wasn't quite so happy with that route. Still pretty good figures though I reckon for a 2.0l cu standard twin solex set up.
