major water leak 2.1 petrol

Post by oorwullie »

i noticed in the mirror clouds of white smoke behind me bus today so i stopped and there was lots of water pissing out of the left side onto the exhaust..............

turned out to be one of the temp sensors on the thermostat housing had blown out!

the remains of the wee wire clip indicated that it had just disintigrated.

a new one on me, maybe others have experienced this already?

it should only be a 5 minute job to clean up and fit the sensor again with a "new" clip, but what a pain to have to completely refill and bleed the cooling system.

i only just checked the antifreeze recently and it was good for down to minus 32°C.

Gotta admit, I'm not a big fan of that sort of clip. I'd far rather have something more positive.

Well spotted, though, that you noticed and stopped in time to save the motor!

Not rare, usually they slacken off allowing a weep from behind the O-ring before they go wooosh. That's why they've replaced them with plastic clips

Well that's bluddy typical, I replaced one of mine recently utilising the existing metal clip and chucked the new plastic one 'cos it didn't look up to the job.
