Advice on Golf purchase

Post by badgerfax »

Good evening all, My wife has been offered a 2008 MK5? Golf GT TD sport 2 litre by her employer, Its a reps car & has pretty high mileage at 162K

I know nothing about Golfs, never owning one before.

The price being banded about was less than £2K which seems pretty cheap.

The only thing that has been mentioned is that the engine has gone into limp mode a couple of times recently but after restarting has been OK. I do have a pretty good mechanic I could call upon to check out the codes before we decide.

Any suggestions?
Twist my nipple nuts and send me to Alaska.

And has it had the second cambelt change if not that'll set you back at least £700, that's a reason why you don't see many old cars now the cost of renewing the cambelt outweighs the value of the vehicle, vw dealer would charge over a grand to do it I believe

The cam belt on my 2008 passat TDi was £355 from a VW dealership. Also the injector issue was on 2005 - 2007 TDi models and I believe there was a recall for the injector issue as well. At less then £2000 would it not be worthwhile getting an AA check?

With respect I've had this debate before ... a mate at work was quoted over a grand (actually £1200 sounds right) to do the cambelt on a GOLF .. the Passat is different being inline not transverse, mine was £300 including a pump, tensioners, belt etc but that's only taking the front bumper, crossbeam and radiator off

I'm not sure when the Siemens injectors were replaced as our 4 company Passats were 56 to 07 plates they were going down at 1 a month after about 80,000 miles and cost £1500 each injector job (including recovery, parts and main stealer labour)

AFAIK the car has full service history, the wife thinks its VW dealership service, will find out.

Did not realize a 2008 car is considered old already, what does that make the bus?

And yes I guess an AA check would be a pretty good idea.

Ian,
The Passat is transverse. It is also based on the Golf. In your defence though, I had the car serviced as well at the same time and including VAT it did cost close to a grand :( . VW do periodically do special offers on servicing and cambelt changes. It's worthwhile keeping a lookout at their dealerships.

Sorry Ian, crossed wires somewhere. I thought we were on about the B6 140bhp. :D

at that mileage I wouldn`t take it as a gift, and
reps motors have always been hammered to buggery.

ask yourself why the boss wants to flog it on.

Seems cheap at £2k, Most of the ones on Autotrader are double that at least
Personally I never worry about mileage, my last car had over 150,000 and is still going strong (Citreon  ) my current TDI PD130 Passat has 207,000 miles on it and I'd happily drive it to the south of France tomorrow.
In fact the only unreliable motors I've had have been oldish but low milage ones.
