Ring or Head?

Post by Sagemagoo »

Started blowing some smoke, some days worse than others, thought it might be the turbo seals - got my mechanic to have a look and it's still smoking with the turbo disconnected so he reckons it's the piston rings.

I have a spare AAZ I can swap over but is it possible it could be valves and is it going to be head off to check?

Definately oil burning, no loss/contamination of coolant, power seems same before the smoke.

1.9TD AAZ

Try disconnecting the breather pipes as well...but it could also be a duff injector...when you say turbo is disconnected is that just the boost side S it could be leaking in the exhaust as well..

Update for the benefit of anyone interested..

Rather than faff about I took the whole turbo off (and was grateful I got spare turbo studs and nuts on my last Brickwerks order) and then poured all the oil out of it - that'll be the seals gone then.

Noticed a crack in the exhaust mounting so took it off to get welded and poured around 2 litres of oil out of that too...

Fitted my spare turbo and big improvement funnily enough -I still get intermittent clouds of oily smoke but am clinging onto the hope that's the oil burning off from inside the exhaust, I got a lovely fireworks display of sparks from the exhaust on the way home which again I think is the carbonised oil burning off as opposed to my non guaranteed ebay turbo breaking up...

Just waiting to repair the water pipe that dropped onto my CV shaft and wore a hole in it and then I can blat around and burn off the rest of that trapped oil and finally confirm that the mechanic didn't have to strip the engine to replace the rings as he originally planned...

Happy Holloween
