Changing Kph dash to Mph

Post by mrbodly »

Hi All

I'm new to the forum. Just bought a left hand drive Aircooled T25, picked it up tonight.

I want to change to speedo from kph to mph, also the dash illumination doesn't work.
Is it worth replacing the entire instrument cluster to solve both issues or is this rather costly?

Cheers
Myles

I believe you can get self adhesive replacements for the dial - if thats easier. Certainly you could get them via ebay at one time. As for lighting, the connector strip and plug for clocks may be making poor contacts (or bulbs blown) but you can test with a meter or even run a small cable directly from lighting switch to power some 12v LEDs for dash lights - depends how 'hands on' you are.

A big welcome - oh and check the WIKI as well as search box - most things have been covered now.

Thanks for the replies chaps.

I will take a look tomorrow in the daylight and see what I can find. I'm sure there are other issues that will swallow up my hard earned cash, so best to keep this one cheap.

Handbrake seems pretty feeble, also noticed a leak, which I guess is the brake cylinder - money better spent here!!

Thanks for the welcome. I'm sure I'll be making plenty more posts in the future!!

These guys do a replacement dial face with MPH and KPH although it's quite pricey. By the time you've thrown in the cost of replacing the dash bulbs you're nearly at the price of the illuminated dial kit that campervanculture are selling.

Personally, I've not had a problem with a KPH dial at the MOT so I'm saving my money for other things, although I have bought some of the LED dash bulb replacements.

It's worth remembering that, whilst that'll give you an MPH speedo, it won't change the odometer - that'll still read KM.

Indeed - the MOT doesn't care... Construction & Use regs _do_ care, but they're never really enforced. Importing an over 10yo vehicle only needs an MOT. Several of our vehicles have KPH speedos, plenty others in the past have had. I don't find it an issue at all, but I know others might. For me, it's just one of those slight wrinkles that means you need to think a _tidge_ harder about driving a cack-hander in the UK, until it becomes second nature (my second car was LHD/KPH, so plenty of practice!)

Rough aide-memoire...

20 = 30
30 = 50
40 = 65
50 = 80
60 =100
70 = 115

50 quid sat nav converts it for you.

Or head up gps speed display for about the same money i think....although ive not seen any for a while.

I wouldnt go messing with the clock.....a lot of the stuff back there is very fragile ....more trouble than its worth

You could always mark the mph points on the dial yourself with small pointers? - its only held on with four screws. I recently needed to check my speedo for accuracy after a bigger wheel upgrade and was pleasantly surprised to find that actually, it was reading correctly at all speeds for the first time. :D

An update - cleaned up the contact points where the bulbs twist in, fitted new bulbs as the old ones had blown - I now have working dash lights! Whilst repairing the lights I fitted an mp3 dab radio (no cd mechanism so less depth, doesn't foul fan housing behind) repairing years of botched wiring along the way. Found a disconnected Blaupunkt amp lurking back there.

Getting used to the kph dial so going to leave as is.

Cheers for all your suggestions.
