1700 KY diesel engine

Post by Stan3 »

Hi All....am proud new owner of my first T25, a partly converted 1990 minibus with a 1700 KY diesel engine...good to have the engine in the back again after three years in a T5 & 14 years since the T2 I wish I hadn't sold for a song!!
Anyone know much about the 1700 KY ?? It's a bit 'slappy' on start up but seems to quieten down when it warms up and purrs along nicely. I guess this is common with these old diesels? Also anyone any idea what mpg I can hope for? Recommendations for which oil and frequency of oil changes?
Thanks!

Hello Stan, my van is a converted minibus and also had the 1700 KY. If your KY is running OK I would stick with it as mine gave about 35mpg. Mine started to lose power and was getting a tad smokey. I had the head off and there was more than one crack between valves, I think this was quite common with the 1700 KY. Like so many on this great site I made the swap to a 1900 1Y ( out of a Caddy but there are other doner engines you could use if you need to) Loads and loads of info on here in the WIKI. Ask all the questions you like and I am sure all will be answered.
Good luck.

Hi Pete

Great, thanks. Yep, I guess treat it kindly & take it steady & look after it with lots of oil changes!
