Well, if its the gasket, don't go to the ridiculous expense of a gasket kit when you only need one part of the kit. You can still buy gasket paper and you can cut this into virtually any shape. I'm old-school and always cut my own gaskets. Contrary to belief. cornflake packet cardboard isn't the same and is too porous but gasket paper is still available and half an hour or so is all it takes to make a fresh gasket.

Where can I get the gasket paper ? I'm happy to make my own, I used to make gaskets when I worked as a maintenance engineer so should be straight forward, just need to know what type to buy and where

Well, here goes, i'm off to replace the top gasket on the right hand carb.
I have bought 2 thicknesses of gasket material, 0.4mm and 0.8mm, the chap in my local auto supplies (Roy's in Bristol) said that this was the stuff used on carb float chambers and fuel pumps. I think i'm going to be spending quite a bit of time in this shop over the winter.
I'll post how I get on later.

Re: Strong smell of petrol in engine compartment
Not bad if I do say so myself. Fairly straight forward job. Used the old gasket as a template and cut out new one. Use 0.8mm thickness, both sheets only cost £1.45 and plenty left over.
No visible signs of any leak even after a run. There is still some petrol smell but a fraction of what it was like before and nothing inside the van.
I will keep a regular check on it and see how it goes
