I got that bit sorry for sounding a bit thick here ! but without relay fitted would even the first fan fire up ?



Im just wondering why it was ever removed, maybe (thinking out loud ) fans didnt work due to earths being so rusty so this relay was removed to try and rectify a problem that was actually being caused by the earths... who knows and i guess never going to know !

looking over past threads that have been started about fans Im not alone in the fans not working so EARTHS CROWNS need to be clean and rust free !

I learnt a lesson from all this earth crowns (didn't even know they existed) and that the relay is only for the second stage fan !

still wonder why it was removed !

NB problem with forums is asking a question sometimes doesn't come over how you mean it to....spoken word is so much better and faster !
I also notice how some of you guys keep well away from my threads due to my how to go faster thread from the not to distant past...its all a learning curve Im a normal guy just trying to understand something new and sometimes one needs to ask to get the answer required for my own personal understanding...thank you to the guys that have helped me on this and to the smug arses that have read this with glee...you had to learn once to !

Let's go over that in more detail, help you understand it...

At the very top, the horizontal black line is a permanent (not ignition switched) +12v.
That comes down the top left, via the fuse S1, to the R/W wire to the rad switch (mid left).
When the rad switch hits 95deg, it connects via the Bk/R to the fan motor (lower left), and on to an earth (bottom) to complete the circuit.
Happy?
So - there's nothing relay-related in there. It's merely a question of the temp being reached.

The high speed fan is switched at 102degC, and the output goes to the relay (upper right) via the R/Bl wire. That causes the relay to connect the +12v (taken off from just after the fuse) to the fan motor via the R wire. The relay's earthed via the far right brown wire.

So - no relay, no switching of the high speed fan.

If the fuse was blown, you'd have no +12v to the permalive pin on the rad switch.
If the fan motor earth was duff, you'd have no fan on either speed.
If the relay earth was duff, the relay wouldn't switch.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread !

I met an old an old friend today who has a 1.6 turbo diesel westy checked his fuse board and no NO.5 relay fitted ! So maybe it was never fitted from new ? My relay turned up today so will fit just in case I should ever find myself in the Nevada Desert !

Or leave out ? just asking to be double sure etc

If you have a 2-speed fan and a 2-temperature sensor (i.e. 3 pin) and the wiring exists in the van then it seems silly (IMHO) not to install the relay for the fast speed option.
