Clutch problem fixed - not the clutch!

Post by Ralf85 »

So an update.

The good news is that the clutch was not at fault. It wasn't clutch cylinders or hydraulics either. It was down to a small ball of metal causing the gear change problems.

At the garage, as they started taking bits apart they noticed something very small. The rod from the slave pushes down on a clutch control arm which is about 10cm long. There should be a small ball shaped piece of metal at the end, that the rod pushes down onto to push the arm and disengage the clutch. This must have broken off (metal fatigue it seems) on my way back from Busfest. So when operating the clutch pedal it was not pushing the clutch enough to disengage it. Just about 5mm of metal that's all. I'm keeping the old part as a memento.

Mike had to really search for a second hand replacement as Brickwerks, JK and VW don't have any new ones (I guess it is something that rarely fails). He put the replacement in and also replaced various seals and bits while replacing this part. The good news is I am back on the road after two weeks and all gear changes are spot on again.

I now need to do a trip as soon as I can!
:ok

glad it now sorted ! :ok

I have heard of these breaking before ( not specific to our vans though ) and also the fingers on the pressure plate can get bent and deform also.

result :ok

- I was suprised you had had problem with 2 sachs clutches

I bought the last petrol clutch arm from VW, I have a few useable used ones in stock to repair customers' jobs, but any bellhousing that is surplus to requirements especially badly corroded ones shoud have all the component parts removed from it for reuse, guide tube, oil thrower, clutch arm and fork and slave cylinder bracket - I have the tools to remove the clutch lever arm and bushes without damaging anything, and worn fork tips can be repaired - or you can have cheap new chinese quality one or a high quality RJES one or VW original one not as strong but fits right still available new but more expensive than RJES ones which are muckle

with these being a cast part I don't know if they will get remade, I certainly couldn't capitalise production of them
