mine has 6 screws along the windscreen, so i would undo these and lower the headlining a bit.

While you're at it you could upgrade to the Golf lamp with courtesy delay.

Good call Scott! Just tracked one down. If I'm right just installing this delay light will make the passenger one dim as well? As detailed here http://www.vanagonwiki.net/index.php?ol ... ior_lights" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Just make sure you get a pigtail of wire with it, as it has a plastic terminal housing not spade terminals.

Well Dan, you've made me go for this now! Not looking forward to guessing where the hole is though  I'm also going to fit a couple of them in the back, feeling under the westy material i've felt a couple of blanking plates

Good stuff! Well if you've got the hard headliner you'll have to take the plunge with the knife. Will detail how I get on with the routing tomorrow.

Make sure you take some piccies of the process!

Additional cab courtesy light wiring

Post by danmetallic »

All done! Pretty simple to do in the end.

Measured up and cut a rectangle for new light. Used Stanley knife to punch through the boarding (although I'm sure there's an easier way).
Image

Undid the front 6 screws of the headliner and routed cable from new hole over to existing light.
Image

Wired in new light using normal spade for positive, and stereo spades for earths.
Image

Then over by the existing light I used a regular spade connector to group the three live cables (one from the battery, one to non courtesy light in the back somewhere and one to the new light). Then used smaller stereo spades for the two new grounds. They just slid onto the spare pins on the light fitting.

Screwed headliner back once I knew it was all working, stuck the fuse back in, and all done.

Works a treat!

Nice mod. :) It has always puzzled me why they didn't have a passenger cab light. How are they supposed to read the maps at night? :D

It does make a difference. I got carried away though and added a jetta style boot light switch to the sliding door and a light over the sliding door. My van is a US import so I've got the map light above the glovebox. It's LED overload at night.

Thanks peeps! It does get rather addictive wiring in new bits.

It'll be looking like this within the next year;-)
