Is this just a gearbox linkage adjustment?

Post by Sagemagoo »

I bought a box of a forum member who assured me it came out of his van and was working fine (I know!).
Just had it fitted and it refuses to go into reverse, 3rd and 5th (5 speed box obviously).
- all the back gears.
The mechanic has just gone for stress break - is this just a gear linkage adjustment?
Cheers

yep he's fitted the rear bush plate on the rear of the boss of the gearbox he needs to unbolt it and move it to the front of the boss and all will be good :ok

And no shame in getting it wrong - everyone has done it at least once. Its one of VW's secret conundrums. :rofl

Sorry - my bad.

The linkage at the gearbox end where the onion goes into the socket wasn't throwing it over enough to select the three gears, after a lot of tweaking still couldn't get it in so he prised open the 'u' bend bracket that attached onto the box selector spindle a couple of mill and it's there.

I'll have a look to see if the boss plate needs re-mounting a bit later (when I work out what it is...)

I think this is my 100th post... :D

Hi, congrats on your 100th post,

However I would imagine if the gear selector had to be prized open then something must be a miss somewhere else, its a pretty thick piece of steel to get damaged to need bending, the bush plate that Aidan has suggested is the one that fits the linkage to the gearbox, it should sit in the middle of the two gaiters at the rear of the linkage in front of the selector cup. This plate should be bolted to the front of the boss on the gearbox and not to the rear of it as may have happend.

Thanks -

The gearbox did roll round the floor of the van when I had to brake a bit sharp on the way there so not sure if that may have done something to the bracket - only way to find out if he's put it on properly is to get back under the van and have a looksee...
