Ever known an alternator to just pack up outputting? Just as I was about to load up ready for The Breeze!

yes, very often the brushes, some alternators you can just swap the brush pack and can be relatively cheap, got to be worth a try.
I take it you checked the voltage at the alternator while running and not at the battery? if not then could be wiring.
Also check the small wire to the alternator has voltage and is connected, I have read on some alternators this forms part of the excitor circuit, depends what alternator you have fitted?
