Incorrect Exhaust Fitted??

I have a 2.1 Dj engine fitted to my 1987 transporter and most of the exhaust except the silencer part needs replacing. However when I've looked at both the JK and VW heritage websites it appears that I have the wrong exhaust. The one currently fitted is this one:

If this is supposed to be for the 1.9 engine, pre 85! I guess I'll need to replace the whole exhaust system!! What's better VW Heritage or JK, about the same price.

Those links are the same I think
You should have the late exhaust with the cast elbow and end fed silencer

personally this is the one I would go for, it will fit early and late... people who have fitted one really recommend them.

Apologies Itchy Feet, put same link twice duh!

Silencer is double fed, same as link which is why I'm questioning if it's the correct one. Obviously it works with this exhaust but am I losing power with this this?

I seem to remember its about torque
Pipes need to be balanced in length which they are not on yours
As you have to replace it go for the later type
Check your rear aluminium engine mount where the rubber mounts fit to see if its the later type with the holes for the silencer saddles

They aren't on the later system, either.

Ok so the imbalance is much less between cylinders with the later exhaust because the variation between pipe length is less

the problem with the Bwerks one is the 8 week lead time, and its far more expensive than the speedshop one. no doubt worth the extra. but you kinda have to plan ahead.

So therefore I need to check if it's a new style engine mount.
Still a bit puzzled why someone would fit an exhaust meant for a 1.9 on a 2.1! It's obviously been on there a long time because apart from the silencer which is fairly new it's rusted through in a few places.

Cost is a concern as even the JK or VW heritage compete unit is £450 and that without fitting! I was hoping I could replace all the pipe work on the current one and use the silencer, but that doesn't appear to be an option.

Yes sticking with the same exhaust type is an option if funds are tight
The fuel savings if any on the later type will take along tome to recoup

either exhaust fits
the early type are cheaper.

the later ones are quieter.

as for power.. you wouldn't notice any difference
Engines like to breathe..and the easier they can suck and blow the better they work.

if you buy a mild steel one then budget to replace it again in a few years.... fitting a exhaust can be one of the toughest most time consuming jobs you will have to do on your van , not sure why you would choose a mild steel over a stainless steel one but thats just my opinion.

Not everybody has the money sometimes you have to go for the cheap option even if it costs more in the long term

Money is an issue as I'm just about to get the van sprayed and it'll deffo need changing for the forthcoming MOT.

Think I'll stick with the one I've got and get the parts I need.
