researching my vans origins

Post by hefti »

so my van seems to be a real contradiction to itself. one one hand it has an underslung water tank with original filler on the passenger side. but then i find reference to the fact that if my van started out life as a panel van it would have the double rubber seals around the windows that were originally panels....and i cant find any info on panel vans coming with water tanks.....
then theres the high top
searched through hundreds of pictures and for sale ads and i have only come across one roof like mine, thinking it to be an EMC conversion but ive seen that if it is then it should have moulded letters into the hightop....
then theres the interior....
i havent seen a single one which has the same interior, i know there are many a home brew camper but my interior is really good quality and so well thought out that every inch of space is utilised i thought perhaps its a buy and fit kit but again i havent seen any like mine and i also cant find any information about it.
would love to know more about my conversion but finding information hard to come by.
but then since im not even certain which 1.9 engine or 5 speed gearbox is in it (interesting when you go to buy parts) i guess knowing which interior is in it isnt really a big deal....
any help or ideas much welcomed

Do you still have the build sticker under the dash, near the pillar on the driver's side? That'll tell you what it left the factory as, which engine, which gearbox, what options. Put all the codes on that into...

Sure, that won't tell you anything about the interior etc, but it'll give you a starting point.

Mind you, just noticed you meant a 1.9 diesel. So, probably, all bets are off as far as that actually meaning anything useful, other than "vaguely historically interesting".

I think you're going to be rummaging for the codes on the engine and box to see what it was that whoever put in.

Remove the nearside seat, there is a plaque under there (right by one of the runners) and it will give you all the details you want
(not about interior conversion as that is non vw)

I have seen people weld caravele windows into panels in fact almost everything can be changed on such an old vehicle so vin plate is the only real way of knowing
