Rattle on tick over

Post by GAZNHAYT25 »

Hi guys need some help and advice if possible, go an air cooled t25 cu, had a major problem with it last year and had to take the engine out for a major over hall. Put it back in and its been absolutely a1 for the last 6000 miles. Ive taken it in for its annual service and to have the carbs balanced and a couple of little jobs however i've picked it up today and there is an internal engine rattle, I have had a crawl over it with an engine stethoscope and the engine its self sounds absolutely a1 but at the back where the crank pulley is is where the noise is coming from its not a crank tap as it doesn't increase when u rev the engine or when the engine is under load but you can hear it on tick over

anyone got any ideas??
I think the crank pulley may have come loose?? does this sound viable if it has do we think it will be terminal?? and do I have to take the engine out again in order to change the crank pulley?? is this a common fault or is it just my little beauty!!!

P.s when we took the engine apart last year it was absolutely immaculate inside the crank shaft etc looked as good as the day it came out the factory and my vans done 118k with full vw history!!

any help greatly appreciated

thanks very much

Hello,

By 'crank pulley' do you mean the turbine with the drive belt for the alternator,, :?:

If so this is held in place by 3 x 13 mm head bolts, and can be reached through the engine flap...

You might need all your wongly bars on the socket wrench.....

Cordialement,

By anychance do you still have the exhaust heat shield tinware? It was vibrating on tickover on mine, one of the tinware screws holding it in place had worked loose.

It is the belt that runs to the alternator yes, I had a look in the daylight earlier and didnt think i could get near it because of the tinware but I Didnt look through the engine flap i will pop up to where i have left it in the morning and see if i can see it through there!

Thanks for your help guys!

sounds like it may be as simple as oil has drained from parts/ bearings whilst not being used check oil level & condition of oil do the easy fix first
if all ok give her a run to get up to a good temp :ok
