Mine came with a 1.6 non-turbo diesel - probably a few bhp down on new - it was absolutely terrible on hills. Bloke down the road has a "new" CS in his westfalia, and he's happy with performance.

If you currently have a 1.9 TD and really want to downgrade, you should probably be looking at the jx 1.6 TD

Plenty of people on here running 1.9 TD's though, without the problems you are describing?

To work out your gearbox code you'll need to get underneath the van, its on the side of the gearbox, nearside.

i think the reason i am having all the probs is because the gearbox never got changed at the same time, i thought it might be cheaper and easier just to change the engine back

I think it depends on whether you can do the swap yourself, or will you need to pay someone to do a swap? You might find someone on here looking to swap their 1.6 TD (JX) for your 1.9 TD?

If you want to swap the gearbox, presuming that your gearbox is originally from a 1.6D or TD, you can get slightly higher gearing by changing it for a petrol box - one of the ones listed as having a 4.83 final drive here:-

http://www.brick-yard.co.uk/vehiclespec ... fo/gbx.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Also - bigger rear tyres might help? Also are you on standard wheels - some people make the mistake of putting bigger wheels on but with low profile tyres, and ending up with a smaller diameter than standard.

Lastly, does your engine still overheat if you stick to 60 or below? Even with a high revving box, a healthy 1.9TD should run without overheating at those revs. If it does overheat at that speed, i'd be inclined to think there's another issue..
