2.1dj knocking/tapping, sound recording,any ideas?

Post by hobart71uk »

Hi all. Right, I started my 2.1dj up today as its not been run for a week or so. I now have a loud knocking / tapping which seems to be on the right hand side.
I did an oil change about 3 weeks ago and put new 5w40 fully synthetic oil in and a new oil filter. The old oil was black as coal so needed doing.
We then had a run up to Edinburgh for a weekend, ran fine. Started it the 3rd day and I noticed this knocking noise which then went after about 20 miles. Drove back to Sheffield no problem. Then today the knocking is back.
I have included a link to a sound recording of the noise to help. Its a Samsung 3ga file but will play on windows media player.
No need to convert to anything or rename to MP3 if you're running Win7. Just right click on the file and open with Windows Media Player. It will prompt you it doesn't recognize the format but it will play. If you check "always open with" it will always play them.
Any ideas anyone that could point me in the right direction? Thanks in advance.

oops..
bit thin that for old hydraulic lifters.
They'll drain down like a dose of the runs with that castor oil in.

If you like synthetic then I'm sure AdrianC will advise on a suitable one
I like using mineral so I would say yes to a 15w/40 mineral.

Cheers for that Kev, think I will go for the 15w40 mineral, any recommendations on manufacturer or are they all pretty much the same?

Castrol do a 15W40 Semi Synthetic

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/like/19062498 ... =92&ff19=0" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

For the benefit of others could you report back 1) if this cures the problem (once you have changed to the thicker grade and driven it for a while) and 2) have you used 5W/30 before in this engine or was this the first time?

The reason I ask is because of recent debates around 'tappet drain down' and how thinner oils do or don't effect this particular issue....I like many others, have suffered from this problem but it seems some users are not effected.
Our best advice ATM, is to use a thicker (15W/40) oil but any experiences supporting this advice help to shape future advice on the WIKI.
