CT valve seals

Hi all,

I have an intermittent smoking issue with the van. If started, stopped for short periods you some times get a bit of grey smoke out of the exhaust. If I sit in traffic, when pulling away sometimes I get quite a cloud of grey smoke. There is a oily burn smell so I have assumed it to be oil.

A mechanic friend saw the start up smoke and said it could possibly valve stem seals. Does the CT engine have them? It may have beetle heads on it as it was describe as a 1641.

To change the seals you need to get the valve out.. so then you will see the state of your valves..

and that the valve guides

are not worn..(letting oil pass)..

I say beetle heads as I thought you had to use them to replace b and p`s. is this not a wise choice? I bought it off ebay as 1640 odd but not sure how to tell. I had heard you could change the seals in situ with air pushing the valves, but I would imagine it would be awkward. Another question please is that I have my original CT in the shed and was looking at a rebuild. I have knocking issues, which seal kit do you use? a ct one or beetle one and a bid of changes. By the way I have enjoyed watching your vids on youtube.

1641 is ok, with a bit of carb tweaking...

You might even have a decent 3rd gear..

Yes you use an OE quality beetle kit plus these..

running twin webers and it does(kinda) move. Straight up to 50! (people laugh when you say that) The guy I bought it off says he ran it with a 2LTR gearbox and quoted some very impressive speeds and economy, but I am not sure. I have found it runs slightly hotter (temp sender mounted in oil cooler, not very accurate but shows an increase) but no two engines run the same. I will look at whether to do a rebuild on the old or mess with the current one. The only thing I don't like about it is the smoking when idling for a bit but the general run to work is usually quiet.

The seal kit was as I thought, the main difference is the push rod seals, but a big difference in price.
