Tiger seal failed on Skylight what next?

Post by 1_eyed_jim »

Morning. The Tiger seal I used to seal the skylight has cracked and is now letting in water. I guess my roof moves a lot when driving after our hot France trip.

Would non setting roofing mastic be a better option for my roof? Does it come in white?

Or maybe something else?

Look at Sikaflex 221 sealant. Probably will do the trick and is available in white too. Make sure that if you buy some, its date code hasn't run out [lots on ebay like that] :ok

Yes loads of tigerseal on ebay that's gone off,if you've used that,that may be the problem, ive tried all types of sealent/ adhesive and id say tigerseal is the best, tho sikaflex is a lot better a not sagging.

I used Dinitrol 501, this is the stuff used to bond windscreens. The 501 is a low modulus but you can also get 500 which does the same but (I think) takes longer to set........

So far it has not cracked or sagged but the only problem is it only comes in black.
I have a dark blue roof so it don't look to bad and I used the old electrical,tape trick to keep the edges tidy.

Was the last tube actually out of date then ?
if it was in date then maybe try something else.
Preparation is important.
Roughen, clean, surface wipe prep and then seal.
Dont just chuck something on, because it will probably only bond to the rubbish on the surface of the roof GRP and then fail again.
Only wear the hat if it fits

That's a good tip 8) Plastic tape, just like sign-writing lining tape [pretty much the same thing, really] always gives a nice clean line if pulled away at a slight angle to the sealer/paint, whereas masking tape will always leave a slightly jagged edge.

I went with a sealer/adhesive called CT1 for this job... but only 4 months ago so can't vouch for longevity in this specific place (though I have a lot of faith in it - simply brilliant,versatile stuff!) http://www.ct1ltd.com/en" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
