Where do you source these engines out of interest? Keen to line up a replacement for my 1.6d. Ebay seem to have scene tax included and makes them a little expensive for an old high mileage engine.

There is lots of cheap 1z and afns on ebay at the mo...failing that breakers yards or buy a cheap old banger with the right engine on from the small ads and wiegh in the left overs...
AAZs are a different story...alway expensive! Best bet is to look for a car with one in and an owner who doesn't realise it's potential value

Re: whats the best donor vehicle for an afn engine?
I just installed an AFN in my 2WD and the 1Z type water pump housing was never going to fit without major surgery
Different drilling positions and face heights, and numerious other issues
In the end it was easier to do away with the oil filler pipe on the sump
fit All the AFN belt gear, and mod the O/S engine support bar(as well as the engine mounts).
Its easy to use the Cam cover filler position, and the filler tube sat exactly where the steering pump now sits.
Has anyone got any first hand experience of a belt system that Will go on a Passat AFN as a direct fit (w'pump, steering pump Alt and tentioner), as i could find none.
It was easier to just get on with it as i had no wheels, but may back track if anyone can help.
Another pain is that the expansion overflow tank fouls the AFN belt tentioner under acceleration and has worn through the back of it, and i like its original position.

Re: whats the best donor vehicle for an afn engine?
I'm running the Passat AFN set up, the top up tank is well clear of the belt tensioner though? I did have to mod the right hand engine bar though due to the ps pump location. I'm also missing the oil filler and dipstick.
I will be building another Passat block up, and will be looking at 1Z aux set up but as you say, you need to grind away some of the block, retap a hole and do something with the ps pump mount. I'll most like keep it all Passat and mod the oil filler as I really miss that. The thing that annoys me the most about the Passat set up is the alternator hits the engine lid, meaning it has to be cut a bit.
