Tappety tap

Hullo folks, I'm looking at a T25 tomorrow, a 1.9 petrol. It has recently had an oil flush and oil change, using 10w 40 semi (now this isn't an oil type thread, have faith ). After this the engine developed what sounded like a tappet noise. The chap that owns it took it back in and asked them to drain and use heavier weight mineral, which they did, and the tapping has now gone.

My question is what would cause the tappet to play up using semi? Could it possibly have been caused by something loosened by the flush (which I've never liked doing myself)? I just want to be sure that the heavier weight oil hasn't been used by the garage to mask a problem.

The trouble with flushing is it can create thinned oil in places after topping up with new. I doubt you'll have any trouble now as the last lot will have churned up nicely and the fresh stuff should have put everything right. Absolutely nothing wrong with the Semi Synth but on some engines (note* some) 10W 40 is too thin and they can suffer from tappet drain down (a phenomenon usually rearing it's head after turning the engine off hot and then standing for a couple of days).

See how she goes with the thicker oil...what did they use? did they tell you?

As far as I'm aware the engine was refilled with basic 20w50 mineral. I'm not familiar with these engines because I've always had Type 1s in the past.

Fingers crossed that's done the job though.

I am currently using mineral oil and my engine drains down after a few days left standing.... always has done for the last 5 years . I think it is affected/made better or worse by the angle the van is left at , my drive does have a slight left/right and front back slant to it. It could be that I have a worn Tappet also.
Its annoying but not annoying enough for me to fix ( yet ) ....

20W50 will be fine for now, however....next change I would recommend 15W 40

Awesome, thanks folks. Looked at the van tonight and it sounded perfect, no (excessive) tappet noise at all.

Put an offer in and the seller accpeted! Pick it up on Saturday
