Engine oil leak I think?
Hi got an oil leak coming from the engine block i think. Its a slow constant drip from the bolt of the engine block nearest the gear box. Does anyone know where this could be from. I will take some pics tomorrow if it helps. Appreciate any ideas. Thanks

Re: Engine oil leak I think?
Could possibly be the main crankshaft oil seal, but post up a pic when you can and I'm sure someone will be along to advise

Re: Engine oil leak I think?
Push rod tube seal leak is my guess
Take the push rod cover off that side and inspect
If there is oil leaking there you may need to clean the area and drive a while to see exactly where the fresh oil is coming out its ok to drive it a while with the covers off
Saw a post recently where the oil presure switch was leaking so another possability
Could be main oil seal on the crank but I suspect you would have clutch isues if it was

Re: Engine oil leak I think?
Thanks 300CE and Itchyfeet. The clutch is fine though the gear selection is a bit sticky for reverse. I put a board down yesterday so i will post pics later of the area and how much oil im loosing in a day. I felt all round the switch and it was oil free. Am i looking at a big job to get this sorted?
Ive not tried anything mechanical with her other than change the alternator the mechanic has done it all. If its an easy fix i will try it other than that its yet another trip to the garage
lol

to feel the oil pressure switch you must have the pushrod tube cover off that side already ( or it's missing as is common)

Hiya got the pics. Just got a horrible feeling on closer inspection that this is not a quick fix job
Would be grateful if anyone could let me know whats involved with the crankshaft seal replacement as i think this might be the culprit.

This is how much oil out in 1 day. Does this make it urgent??

Itchyfeet you are right i have no covers on the pushrods.
Many thanks

Re: Engine oil leak I think?
Wow that's a very clean engine is it a recon?
Does look like crank seal and that much is a lot
if it is then it will get thrown around inside the bellhousing and contaminate the clutch
Need to take gearbox off then remove clutch then remove flywheel to get at the seal
May need a new clutch
I suppose it could also be gearbox input shaft but gearbox oil has a differert smell so get sniffing

Re: Engine oil leak I think?
Lol yes that bloody oil is dirtying my nice shiny engine
Its a remanufacture one i had put in about june. Not an experienced vw mechanic so loads of probs with refit. This leak has been their since then but was not so bad. Had it in for mot and thought it got fixed then but i was wrong.
Right off to sniff some oil. Update you soon lol

Re: Engine oil leak I think?
Had a sniff and it def smells like ordinary oil to me. Also tried a wee sniff of some brake n clutch fluid so if gearbox oil smells anything like that then thats not it. There is no chance i can take gearbox off so need to get her to a man that can.
Coffee time!! All that oil has gone straight to my head

Remanufactured by who?
Crank seal should have been replaced with a remanufacture
Did you swap your old flywheel on to the new engine?
Seal runs on the flywheel so if the flywheel is badly grooved it can leak even with a new seal

Re: Engine oil leak I think?
Got it from Elite. Who i have read mixed reviews about. It was a bare engine and needed all the bits from my old engine putting back on it. Unfortunately thats all i know. I bought the engine and got someone to put it in so really dont know about the flywheel. I do know that their was no leak on the old engine when it was running.

Re: Engine oil leak I think?
No unfortunately im in Glasgow so no chance of that. I have a good vw guy close buy but if the engine needs changed again its going to cost another refit price. Arghhh!!
