These heads can't be skimmed, getting it checked for flatness shouldnt cost much so could get it done. Replacing and refitting is easy and doesn't require that much in the way of specialised skills/tools so if you don't want to pay the mechanics I'm sure folks on here could help you find your way. I did mine recently and can help with tips. Your cracks are pretty good, mine looked a lot worse!

Saying that if you decide to ditch the engine I will buy your sump!

Ps. Have you said anywhere exactly whst this engine is, if so I've missed that bit
VW say these heads carnt be skimmed. But engine reconditioners do skim them & had it done .

Wrong again... It's a 1.9.. If your referring to the black stuff on the head surface bear in mind on these engines the head gasket is a steel one coated with black latex type stuff...I think that's what your withered old eyes are seeing there and your senile old brain is assuming its soot!

Are you blind or just plain rude?

No, I am neither blind nor rude ( unlike you) - if you cannot see that to which I am referring you must be blind. And no I do not mean where the the gasket coating has adhered to the head. Where have I said that it is not a 1.9? Now wind your neck in and stop pontificating!

Don't know but the gasket edges of cylinders 1 & 2 don't look to clever on the bottom side.
He didn't say which two cylinders had water in them...
Peeps are a bit minimalist in the information given these days, suppose it keeps it all an interesting guessing game

No. 3 on the manifold side is often the worst for gasket probs. well for oilway ones anyway.
