Won't start possible flooding

Post by Kev73 »

So picked up the van wednesday, 1.9 watercooled petrol westy, noticed a problem with the brakes which I'm trying to get sorted in the meantime I can't really drive it. I thought at least I can give it a good clean, went to drive it round the back and it won't start. I thought I may have flooded it so left it a couple of hours but it still won't start, turns over ok battery is fine but will not fire up.
I'm very very peed off.
If it ain't broke, fix it till it is.

Get yourself a copy of your owners manual.

yep.

Approach vehicle.
Stroke back end.
whisper sweet nothings - tell him/her (you have named it, right?) how lovely she is
Reassure that nothing nasty is going to happen
(and if it does, you will sort it anyway)

the prep done....jump in the front, put key in ignition.
Offer a prayer to whatever God you choose that "the van" will want to play, and doesn't fancy a day/week/month off
Now...if its warm, and its a carbed petrol, you need to put your accelerator flat to the floor, and hold it there while cranking. This is what the instructions say. Now...I know with mine that its not fully to the floor, but will need a gentle kick. They are all different
Give encouragement! Verbal! at all times
And thanks for when he/she starts!!

Remember...its new to you...it won't start...its likely its sommat you are doing wrong...not it! ITS NOT A CAR!! IT WON'T BEHAVE LIKE ONE!!

I always say thanks to mine on reaching the destination....even when its brought me to work.... :-)

Good luck

Aah thanks, I do have a manual but haven't read it yet. I bought it off a fella who's quite well known round these parts and he's assured me its a great van and I trust him so I was pretty sure the problem was me.
If it ain't broke, fix it till it is.

always like the "drive off straight away part", its as if they're saying 'youve got the bugger started now get going quick before it changes its mind'
On a serious note though why is it necessary to "drive off straight away"? what damage can be caused by stationary idling? if you are intending to do some fettling which requires the engine to be running what kind of damage could you be doing?
