Re: blockage in head gasket
Probably should say what engine, what happened for you to give it to the mechanic in the first case. Never heard of a blockage in the head gasket so ask for more of an explanation.

Re: blockage in head gasket
Change your mechanic time by the sound of it! Weird diagnosis. Fuel or electrical I would focus on. Petrolheads will be along soon!

Re: blockage in head gasket
Hi,
I'd ask more questions!
The flat four WBX doesn't have a 'head gasket' in the conventional sense, it has a number of indvidual seals instead.
A conventional head gasket looks a little like the picture here http://www.aa1car.com/library/ic697.htm. I suppose that something could get stuck in one of the smaller holes and cause a blockage, but even this seems unlikley.
However, on the WBX you have one metal ring, two rubber rings per psiton and a thick head to block seal on each head. Now these may leak (particularly the block to head seal) but they couldn't get blocked - there is no hole to block.
If it was 'conking out' because it got too hot, then the route of bleeding it may of helped. If it wasn't over heating and it is now then he has made the problem worse, not better.
If it wasn't overheating prior to your 'mechanic' looking at it then as Oldiebut Goodie suggested its most likley to be fuel starvation (blocked filters?) or electrical (coil?) neither of which are likley to be made better by swapping to a golf temprature gauge!!
If however he is still hunting for a reason for overheating, then check its bled properly, the theromstat opens, the fan kicks in at the right time, the whole of the radiator gets hot...
IMHO your mechanic is taking you for a ride!
Good luck with it,
Cheers,
Alex

... sounds like Vanagon Syndrome look it up in the Wiki.

Your injection ECU depends on it's sensors and if some muppetry has been randomly screwing around with them and swapping other things in and out then anything could be happening. The needle going straight to the red sounds like it's been earthed out.
The only thing that's 100% certain is that you need to stop using that mechanic.

Re: blockage in head gasket
You've already been advised to dump this mechanic ... give him his wish, book it in with a decent one familiar with these engines (as said before Gasure is only in Chester).
