Hi Guys - I seem to have an earthing problem and my van won't start.
Symptoms : Get the solenoid click, and occasionally it will turn over half a turn slowly.
Jump leads don't help, same effect. But a jump lead from gearbox to towbar (earth) and she fires straight up
So what earth straps are supposed to be fitted ? Have i failed to refit one when I changed the gearbox ?
Bear it mind its a 1z Tdi, so not normal.
Thanks for your advice
Rich

Re: Earth Straps
just add another one from the gearbox to chassis ... halfords sell them for a few £'s.. see if that helps. You dont want to be risking overloading the wiring by not having sufficient Earth's.

Re: Earth Straps
Are you using tdi starter, starter adapter plate etc? Mine did the same when I fitted them. Mine would only start with a jump lead from starter adapter to battery.
Cleaned bell housing surface, bolt holes etc for good metal contact. Cleaned up oe strap and bolts etc where it connected to battery, put second strap onto starter adapter in the end.

Re: Earth Straps
always take the earth to the starter motor if you can saves on corrosion of the gearbox case and path of least resistance better for cranking

Re: Earth Straps

Re: Earth Straps
Thanks Guys.
We are moving house at the moment, so it is chaos, and van not starting is a PITA.
I've still got a non Tdi starter which has had one rebuild, so am looking to upgrade it with adapter when it shuffles off.
So I'll look for and clean the gearbox strap and see if I can add another direct to one on the starter bolts.
Gonna have the luxury of a workshop from next week Wahooooooooo
Cheers
