stone in my auto?

Post by project25 »

Hi, Bit of a strange question, but is it possible for a stone to get into and then flung out of the torque converter when running.?
Twice I have had a clattering noise, couple of seconds, once a stone? crashed into the underside when I was going slow. Something flung the stone out that was spinning much faster than my wheels.
Our road has just been "surface dressed" by the council (whats that all about) and there are heaps of small gravel chippings everywhere.

I once had a torque converter on a Peugeot 406.
It started leaking, and I had the gasket replaced.
Now, I reckon that if a stone could get into and out of your torque converter, it would be p*ssing auto transmission fluid out all over the place wouldnt it ?
So, unless torque converters are radically different on VWs, or yours is leaking all over the place allowing stones in and out, I would say the answer is

No.

The torque convertor is bolted to the flexi plate ensure a bolt is not loose or missing.

I suppose a stone could get in where the slots in the bellhousing are but its pretty unlikely.

As camper has said, i'd check for loose/missing bolts.

Hi, thanks for replies, think I had better check those bolts at the weekend. The box is working a treat and no oil leaks. Nice looking photo of an auto box I thought they were as rear as hens teeth. Council came and hoovered up the stone chippings today, I guess to go and glue them down somewhere else.
