Confused, what engine is mine? HELP

Post by hobart71uk »

Hi all, right maybe I am being a little "thick" here, it has been known! but Im not sure what engine I have! When I got my T25 I was told it was a 2.1DJ, it also says that on the log book. Now the confusing bit, I have just checked the engine block number under the breather housing and the engine code is DG015014, yet it has injection on it and all the bits for DJ, AFM etc. It had a recon engine fitted some years ago before I took possession so now I really don't have a clue. All the ignition part numbers match up for a DJ. Please help and I really don't mind if you call me stupid or words to that effect! Thanks in advance

Hi,

Does the plate on the A pillar say DJ?

Of course, that only means what it started life with..

Isn't a DH engine effectively a DG with injection on it? I wonder if the reconditioned lump wasn't a DJ.. :?

The DG******* number is only really a casing number, the engine could be a 2.1 rebuilt into a 1.9 case OR it may be that someone has grafted the injection system onto a 1.9 ... effectively creating a DH engine.

The only real way of finding out is to measure the stroke ... 1.9 DG is shorter than a 2.1 DJ/MV/SS engine OR point it at a hill and see if it struggles :pimp

Im thinking that someone has maybe created a DH as like you say, its quicker to walk when going up hill! would it be possible to identify it from the dizzy part number? its got a 025905205N / 0237022053

Thanks everyone for your help

Nope, they'd probably have to use the DJ dizzy anyway for the injection.

Thanks Ian. This all came about as I need a new dizzy but not sure which to fit. Mine has the 025905205N, do you think the 025905205AF dizzy would be ok if I made sure I changed the vacuum unit for the one with two hose inlets on?

I have never been able to determine for sure if there is any difference in the internals of the 1.9 and 2.1 DJ dizzy and I've searched high and low and asked people like Brickie and others who have great knowledge and noone knows, it's not possible to determine from any mechanical difference, only Bosch or VW would know for sure if the advance plate is different
as stated measure the stroke of the engine (pencil in the spark plug hole) to determine what you actually have as the base engine
is there an asterix after the engine number ? if so then it was at one time rebuilt by VW or someone pretending it was a VW rebuild
Is there any evidence of a recent rebuild ? If not chances are it's a second hand DG swapped across when the DJ when went to the great breaker in the sky or when it was robbed out to upgrade another van, as such it won't be running optimally with the injection system as it'll be fuelling for the bigger engine, though it may be possible with some tweaking who really knows their wbx to get an acceptable performance

Hi Aidan, to measure the stroke do you take the measurement from the bottom of the spark plug hole (I imagine you would)?
According to the previous owner it was fitted a few years ago so any evidence of a rebuild has gone now anyway (apart from green paint flaking off the block) I am having a few running problems which I have put down to someone previously messing about with it. I keep getting a misfire / pop in the air inlet housing between AFM and throttle housing. Ive got a feeling its an air leak somewhere so im currently renewing hoses and seals. To be honest though im actually enjoying myself working on it! :)

it doesn't matter what reference point you use as long as it is constant so I'd use the part of the head where I can stick a straight edge or similar across as long as your probe is longer than the potential stroke rotate the engine to get bdc and tdc points and measure the difference
flaking green paint sounds like an elite rebuild in which case it may well be DJ internals in a DG case
