glow plug relay problems

Post by stevealex »

Hi

I'm having problems with my glow plug relay keeping the glow plugs on all the time with the ignition on, causing the relay to burn out.

I think it's a problem on the 50 connection. Am I right in thinking this should only recieve a positive feed when the starter is turning? (mine is live all the time with ignition on).

This is a very odd fault as it's causing the glow plug warning light not to work, although when I earth the L connection it functions properly.

Any ideas, or answers to my connection 50 question gratefully recieved.

Forgot to say this on a JX which has been fitted with a 1Y.

Cheers Steve

Thanks Oldiebut goodie.

I think the problem is definitely constant supply to the 50 connection, just hope when I sort that the glow plug light returns to normal service; as it passes the test to check it works in isolation.

Thanks Steve

Maybe someone has swapped over 86 and 50 wires in the relay socket? Has anyone messed around in your black box?

No that all seems original. The wiring to the ignition switch have all been chopped and remade by the previous owner (only had the camper since february). Probably foolishly I reconnected one of these when I was tidying wiring, thinking I had disconnected it whilst working. I have a feeling that this might be the issue as the fault occured some time after this. I will check these wires tomorrow, I only remembered the lose wire tonight; I have a feeling the previous owner had made a mis-connection and then just left it disconnected rather than sorting the mistake. Over the years I have come to hate other peoples wiring jobs

Thanks again Steve
