Smoke from left air vent (filter side) if engine under load

Post by sharkjazz »

Hi guys,

Took the daughter to school the other day which is at the top of a hill, not particularly steep, but an incline none the less (enough to stress out the 1.6t diesel - tbh what incline isn't enough to stress out the ol' gal).

When I parked up, I noticed whiteish / grey smoke coming from the left air vent / filter side. I had a good whiff and it didn't smell "too bad" (unlike the time I had thick black smoke bellowing out the right side air vent....)

Have had to use the van a couple of times since, just on a flat road, keeping below 20mph and no smoke.

Am not sure if I am being paranoid, but there may be more of a "smell" when park up even if no smoke.

Had a search around found this thread
Oil soaked air filter
https://club8090.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.p ... air+filter" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Which I think could be the issue, will check at first chance I get.

Are there other possible causes for this and things to check for before calling in the mechanic. Have found a trusted guy here, but he is 3 hours away. He will come out here for a home visit, but that will be costly so would rather exhaut my (limited) DIY options first.

As always, many thanks :-)

oh, and apologies for posting this before checking the oily air filter. Just got a few other issues (no internet in house, bike fell apart yesterday), is rainy season so the roads are a river of mud so is difficult getting to the internet. Thought would just post whilst I am here and see if any other suggestions come in before head back home

white smoke usually coolant dripping onto the exhaust, blue grey is oil doing the same
probably the heater hose at the front of the block or rocker cover gasket, could also be the turbo oil return pipe or something in that area if oil

Many thanks. Will dive in this weekend and have a look. All sounds beyond me though.

From the way you put it, doesn't sound too serious. Just a leak somewhere dripping onto something hot.
