1980 T25 1600cc Aircooled Engine Cylinder head issue

Post by justoneon »

Hi VW nuts,

Just to let you know I'm new to VWs and this forum and therefore i apologise if my terminology is a bit off.

I'm having a hell of a time chasing down a cylinder head for my van which i have found out being a 1980 makes tracking down the right cylinder head very very difficult as VW only produced the 7 fin cylinder heads for the CT air cooled 1600 engines for a year (i am told).

After the right side Cylinder head needed replacing (because where the exhaust is bolted on it broke off and was beyond repair) I was sold a new cylinder head which not long after being fitted blew out, lost compression and therefore power and had to once again be replaced as it was fitted with the wrong head. The head fitted was a 6 fin cylinder head which does not give the valves enough clearance and ended up bending the push rod tubes also. There is probably only 5 millimetres difference between the 6 fin and 7 fin cylinder heads though from what I've found out absolutely crucial.

I am currently on the coast in Canterbury and stranded here until I can find the right head. Have been here for a few days and I've tried contacting countless parts specialists to no avail as no one seems to stock the 7 fin head I am after (I have only been able to find the head with 6 fins).

If anyone knows where i may be able to get hold of this part would be brilliant, as Im a campervanning nomadic Aussie I'm not sure who to turn to on this.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hello,

At least you picked a nice spot...... :)

OK, yes you need ct heads to fit ct barrels and pistons.. yes there was a design change..

Depending on.. state of finances.. how far to help..how much you can do..

You can go the full 'beetle 'conversion.. with short plugs..

I have maybe early heads here,..

But I can recondition most heads..

But as you see..

I am in France..

Someone will be along I'm sure..

Cordialement,

Cheers anyway,

Have decided to go down the top end rebuild track. Turns out they only made two other heads like mine, ones down the bottom of the Channel and the other ones in the VW museum.

Cheers

Have you tried Elite VW in Basildon?

they are helpful and have lots of stuff floating around

doesn't sound hopeful, though :-(

Not to sure what your problem is, VW changed the heads after the first year and only supplied the new heads as replacements for earlier engines, never had an issue fitting the later heads the only proviso was we had to fit two new heads if one needed replacing. The new type heads have the number 070 101 375B cast onto them.
