Re: The VOLTSWAGON
Well spent half the day removing all the sealant and such, then made inroads to see how far the problem goes,
noted the thin wire in the sealnt, so looks like it was hot wired in, very nice
osr corner, plastic plug is for access to the connector for the rear wash wipe etc

this is what we now see,, note the old bottle opener.!!

this is the better rear corner

nice

outer rear skin removed

hmmmm

not much point adding dialogue
now here we go with the further issues

so ive whipped this rotten bit off, will use it as a template and it looks like i may have to make a complete length as the velle ones are too short, need to have a further think about this tomoz
but its tricky with it sitting on top oif the moulding...

so what else can we find... well i was considering removing the screen but have got this far with it in but.
we have big issues here as well

and if you enlarge this then you can actually see the glass end on, for some reason it has had the rubber cut. maybe its hhad a lower repair and its too tight. bit of a worry really

and just to cap it off lets do things twice

so got to remove the creen and then some serious reconstruction work....
it also looks like the water has been able to run into the screen surround at thesse corners and do its thing, i will take a pick tomoz of the underside of the mass of sealant i cut of here

Re: The VOLTSWAGON
Even though I've seen this before its still shocking how bad they get. As I was hacking off the 1st Dehler roof I found the same, was trashing the shell so didn't investigate further. The 2nd one sitting waiting for attention has all the same external signs, such as crusty gutters and crumbly corners. I'll put money on all Dehlers looking like this under the hood after 20 odd years.
You've certainly got lots of stuff to keep you busy. Ray made a wise move I say.
Interested in what you do when returning the roof onto rebuilt shell to mitigate future rotting.

Re: The VOLTSWAGON
wish i had the luxury of a scrap shell to take it off....
i will be replacing all the steel it sits on so that will be a start, the greatest area of corrosion looks to be where water has come in through the large roof light and then hidden between the 2 skins and down into the area seen.
??
also as the screen is now coming out, it may help you with the front lip ararngement, maybe i can make a template or something, its fairly simple just double curves is all

The bottle opener?
Is there rear access to where that was hiding, could it have been put on a ledge and slid out of reach - or was Fritz drinking his lunch when that van's roof was going on?
