Will start wont rev or idle

1985 leisuredrive with 1.9 DG showing 90k, rebuilt engine 600 miles ago, Given a full engine service to inspect oil and coolant and check all the nuts and bolts are tight this week. Now the blessed thing wont idle or rev cleanly, Was fitted with a new rotor arm and dizzy cap which have both checked out ok,( problem persists with the old rotor and cap). Rechecked plug gaps which where replaced on rebuild, checked air filter , replaced fuel filter with service. Fuel pump delivers approx. half a litre in 25 seconds. When it does start it will only run on a constantly adjusted accelerator position but spits and pops and back fires then when I take foot off the peddle its dies, it will start straight back up again but carries on in the same manner. I thought about trying bad language but the missus came home.

Open to all suggestions now !!

If all the plug leads have been off I'd double check they're all on the right plugs. Sounds like at least two aren't

Think I've got it sorted, swopped coil out with one off a mates van and Its running sweetly so will try a new coil and go from there. Been for a run up the road and appears to be back to normal. Time for a beer.
