cv boots

Post by syncron ice »

Morning,

Are the front driveshafts on the 16" and 14" the same? If so would the inner boots be the same?

Cheers,

Tony

Inner boots are the same, the shafts and outer boots/cvj's are different depending on diff locks ect

Hi all,
Thanks for your help. Just finally got around to doing (starting)the job. Parts came from Baxter (thank you Simon).

Got the front shaft off, didn't break anything but for you sixteeners;

Pick out all gunge from inner bolts (applies to all). Loosen off six inner bolts while van on ground. You will have to push van forwards or backwards to access all bolts. (Got a 6mm hex Tengtools socket with a bit of an extension for 8e and worked a treat. I have to say that I've been spraying these bolts with releasing fluid (3 in 1) for at least a week while waiting for the boot to come. Make sure the hex sits squarely and all popped off ok.

I had also previously loosened the hub nut easily. You also need to undo the two bolts from the upper wishbone and tap the wishbone upwards with a wooden mallet. Undo the 10mm bolt securing the brake hose, it stops any strain on the hose.

Using a pullers to 'push' the outer splined part of the shaft through the hub (I could push it by hand) you're nearly there. However, now you've limited maneuverability so you need to undo the drop arm and push it upwards to clear the bottom arm (I used a bottle jack with a piece of wood on it) and then you can move it towards the front of the van. Lift the outer part of the drive shaft upwards and towards the front of van and extract. Whew!

Don't lose the rag now, just get lots of them! Its messy. Clean away as much shyte as you can and undo the big and small boot clips (very easy).

Using a proper circlip tool (makes a difference) remove the clip. Believe it or not the joint just slid off by hand (which leads me to believe that this has been done before on this shaft as there was obviously no ingress of aqua). Twist the inner part of joint a bit and take out bearings from cage. I used petrol to clean everything (and lots of old underpants!) and washed all components in hot soapy water and dried immediately in older underpants.

Update when I get back to it tomorrow. Needless to say I'm happy to have got this far and now I'm slightly ineeeeebreeated!

Many thanks again for all the help.

P.s. no photos cos I was alone and didn't want to wreck my phone. :ok
