So, ferry booked last night for our first proper trip away in Eddie in a few weeks time. Run my son down to nursery this morning, get back to the van after dropping him off and find a slowly growing pool of oil underneath him. He's currently parked up at the local garage who can't have a look until Thursday (but at least he's messing up their floor and not mine). Anyway, in retrospect there's a few things I've noticed in the last week or so and wondered if they pointed to anything specific:
- First off the engine bay has been staying very hot for a very long time - drove down to Derby last week, got there around 5:00, hatch cover was still very warm to the touch at 11:00. I know it has the r'n'r bed cover over it but is this normal?
- Yesterday noticed some spotting on the road / drive when I reversed him in after a run out but when I went to inspect it, it was a sort of oily water mixture. Thought at the time it might be because we'd had a lot of rain which might had been splashing up under the van and running off again (though probably more wishful thinking).
No odd noises, checked oil / coolant levels fine before run to Derby, we do get the odd bit of oil spotting on the driveway but assumed that was normal for these vans?
Bottom line is I don't know my whatsit form my elbow when it comes to mechanics - in fact my post today was going to be if there are any 1.6td owners in North Yorkshire area who are handy under the hood and prepared to give me an hour or so of their time (duly compensated) to talk me through the basics then I'd be grateful. Understand that there could be any number of reasons for an oil leak, just wondered if the points above might point to anything in particular (+ mainly wanting to spout after what is turning into a c**p day).

It does have the undertray. Yesterday (when the amount being dropped went up) was fairly dry - I wonder if something is leaking onto the tray (coolant?) that's then washing the oil out. When I went back to the garage yesterday to get the toddler seat, the cardboard they'd put underneath was fairly oily but also looked damp. Oh well, we'll see tomorrow when they have a look. Fingers crossed...

I don't think the undertrays help at all.....although mine stayed on until I swopped out my engine.

Garage have had a quick squint, apparently it's the oil feed pipe to the turbo that needs replacing. Breathing a rather large sigh of relief!
Another day I might actually have had a go at doing this myself but struggling to get the day job done as it is at the moment so will just have to let the garage get on with it.
Cheers for the input.
