Gearbox Problem

Post by DarrenH65 »

Hello, I have a 1982 Aircooled 2.0 litre Type 25 Westfalia left hand drive. When driving to Penrith last week the gearbox went - 3rd and fourth gears would not work. We were towed home to West Yorkshire via the aa by a nice guy from Darlington. Our mechanic looked at the gearbox and said that it has a collapsed bearing and may have other things wrong with it. We have tried to find a reconditioned gearbox via the internet and a couple of contacts and have been quoted £275.00 plus vat for one with no guarantee from a breakers to £700.00 plus on websites but wih no clear guarantee and they requested the damaged gearbox in part ex to recondition.

Can anyone provide either a website, telephone number or address for somewhere reliable who will sell me a reconditioned gearbox at a reaqsonable rate with a worthwhile guarantee so that my mechanic can fit it before the summer ends.

Also any other advice ie ho do we tell if what is being solid is ok and how much should we pay?

This is my first posting as I rejoined today having forgotten the original password. We have only had the van since April 2013 and are novices!

We are in Brighouse West Yorkshire.

Thanks

Darren

ps please reply to wendy.squeeks@btopenworld.com which is my partner's email address unless answers are just posted on the forum as I have had to re-register with a work email.

Thanks I will ring them tomorrow. Whilst I'm on here the internal heater on our van - eberspacher seems to be continually blowing hot air into the van. Any idea how I operate./turn the thing on and off? If not never mind as you have been really helpful already
