Hello
I have been swapping a knackered JX engine (the big ends have gone) for a AAZ.
The engine is all in and I got it running on Friday but have a problem in that the engine will idle ok but if you try to increase the revs it starts to miss and you get unburnt fuel smoke from the exhaust. The AAZ came out of a golf I broke probably 4 years ago. It ran well before I took the engine out.
It has a hand primer fitted in the fuel line between the filter and injection pump and if you pump this with the engine running the revs pick up slightly and if you pump it while you try to increase the revs on the throttle leaver the revs do increase but still lots of missing and smoke.
Could it be the injection pump damage from sitting around for 4 years?
Any other ideas, I'm going to check timing etc again next as I've had the cam and crank sprockets off to replace the seals.
Thanks
AAZ Injection pump problem?

Sounds like you have the timing one tooth out to me and/or possible air in the injector lines.

Re: AAZ Injection pump problem?
Hi .... I had exactly the same problem with an AAZ conversion .... I ended up buying another (cheeseman ) modified injector pump but still the same problem .... I have just got it running this afternoon by same as you squeezing the hand primer and continually trying to tickle the engine along - after about 30 - 40 mins of this it now runs sweet ..... I think there may have been some kind of air lock somewhere where has now found its way out ..... so keep trying and squeezing and hopefully yours may be the same issue
