1.9 caravelle engine running

Post by ethelred the ready »

Hello there i have acquired a 1989 1.9 watercooled caravelle with single weber carb and standard distributer ignition system and i have just got it running after reading the wicki and trawling this excellent forum which has been greaat help to a new vw owner like me. Before my question here is what i have done to get it running:
New plugs, leads, rotor arm and hall sensor solved cutting out when warm
Replaced fuel pipe and single fuel filter to try to fix lack of power previous long term owner reported. He had already replaced fuel pump before van sat for 2 years unused before i got it.
Checked pump rod length (ok) and replaced all vacuum hoses and checked for vacuum leaks (none)
Blew through all carb jets and passages to fix lack of power and hesitation (seems to have worked)

I couldnt have done any of this without this forum which has been a goldmine of info. the van now runs at 30mph in fifth gear and slowly gets up to 55 60 mph on dual carriageway. It feels about as fast as a series land rover with the 2.25 petrol engine, i this about right or should it have more pull? I know the weber has a bad reputation and if this is all i can live with it until i can source a second hand pierburg, or is their something else i have missed? As this is the only t25 i have driven it is hard to tell..... :?

Last question, if i lpg it presumably the carb is irrelevent when running on gas. Does anyone here run a single weber on lpg?
Thanks for a great forum and wicki.

Hi,

Not driven a land rover so can't comment on relative speeds!

I have 1.9 DG with single weber. It can do well over 55 / 60 mph. I tend to cruise at about 65, but it can do bursts of up to 80 (ish) mph, so yours sounds possibly a little slow.

If you've been fiddling with the distributor, have you checked the timing and that the vacuum advance works? Problems with these made mine sluggish with a simialr top speed.

Also, there is a filter in the carb inlet. If you look where the fuels lines go in there is a big round brass nut - undo it and inside lives a little mesh filter that may be full of crud.

Good luck!

Thanks alex. Yours does sound faster so still some work to do. I did clean out the plastic gauze filter in the carb so not that. Regards the timing i did mark it before i took the distributer off so it went back in the same place but my old timingnlight broke years ago and i didnt replace it so i might have to buy one again. Funny i needed one a few months ago when fitting electronic timing to my 2cv but was able to borrow one but that one is not available now. Will try settingthe timing and seeing if that gives it more pep.

Thanks!
Dan
