I have a mechanic here with me but hasnt done much work on VW;s Needs to know can the tappets be altered with the van situ or do you need to get to take of the crankshaft.I really havent got a clue

does it have adjustable tappets?
most if not all t25s have hydraulic lifters

Is it possible to replace hydraulic tappets with the engine installed?

plausable.
but very very tricky.
you'll need telescopic pushrod tubes to replace the ones you junk doing it
with the engine in one piece..ideally the head comes off.
why are you wanting todo this?

One of the push rods has come loose and there is loads of play in it when being pushed back in

Now the mechanic has said that it wont stop the blue smoke and its probably the valve outlets and i might as well get a new engine.Its all gone abit drastic

How did it go from trying to adjust the (probably non-adjustable) tappets to "You probably need a new engine" in a couple of hours?

Did you ever do the compression check that you were asking about a few days ago? That would really tell you a lot more than a mechanic just guessing what the problem is. There are a couple of ways that an engine would typically burn oil: worn rings or bores, or worn valve guides (including valve stem oil seals, when the engine has them). You can test for the former problem with the compression test. If the engine was running fine before its 18-month layup, it's unlikely that anything has managed to get very worn in 18-months of doing nothing. One common reason for the symptoms you describe after an engine hasn't run for a while is a ring or two getting stuck, and they often free up after a bit of running.
Has the engine actually been run up to temperature and taken for a drive, or just started for a minute then turned off? These problems will often sort themselves after a run, as it can take a good while for the hydraulic tappets to work properly after they have drained down.

I'd second RedGus - if it wasn't broken before you laid it up, there are a limited number if things that could be wrong with it.
Have you changed the oil, ensured you have the correct level and taken it for a good long drive until it got up to temperature?

Funny! I was thinking that too - "valve outlets"

It seems as if a lot of "mechanics" these days are from the "keep changing bits for new until it sort of works" school, rather than actually using a bit of common sense and investigation to work out what's wrong. Oh, and if all else fails, make up some random technical-sounding words and hold out your had for some money.
