"Period" radio/cassette units

Post by silverbullet »

Anyone else using a "correct year" radio in their bus? I've just remembered that I've got an early 90's Blaupunkt Boston CC20 squirrelled away at home :D

Now if I can just remember the code...

Ahh classic, I think my bro had one like that in his porker back in his city IT contracting days. I have a slightly later Blaupunkt Lausanne RD148 (with CD) in my pickup. Not sure of year but it still has that retro look to it. It may soon be making way for a 1999 VW Gamma though which will colour-coordinate better with the Passat clocks. You can get a CD-changer emulator for the Gamma so you can play MP3 files from a pen drive, using the normal buttons on the head unit.

I've got an old style Blauplunkt radio cassette in my 1981 van - don't know that it's the original though. Have quite a collection of cassettes - sometimes it pays off holding onto to stuff!! The sound is pretty good- well I think so !

You kept that quiet Brian! Have you got the power pack for it too? Usually fitted under the rear seat as a sort of primitive auxiliary heater  We have more in common than I realized: what's the old lady then? MkV?

PS Best to speak in code, don't want a revolution

Don't get too excited, Ian, the old lady was rehomed some 20 years ago. She was a 3 1/2 litre Steel Saloon, nowadays given the MkIV moniker.

The power pack is present and actually in that pic as it was fitted behind the dash with just a short power lead. Am now looking to move it on if you know anyone that wants a period radio.

Ah OK Brian I shall mention it to His Nibs. There is a market for them: complete is essential, working would be a bonus.

I've got a nice OEM r/c unit on the way to fit in the syncro, pic when it arrives

The things you're up against with these older units are, brittle/broken plastic components, internal rust through poor storage (and vehicles themselves are not great for units), leaking capacitors, rotting rubber belts and a whole host of other probs. Bear in mind that even if you can find a working one, chances are it'll need work to get it in full order. Oh the days of chewed c90's.....

My bus has an old Sharp stereo in the rear, but a relatively modern one in the front. The tape player is pretty awful though and doesnt work well.

I do have a tape blaupunkt in the cupboard under the stairs from my old Mk2 golf but I'd rather put the new bluetooth, mp3 one in ;)

My brother once sold his 6v blaupukt radio when he converted to 12v ....for more than he gave for the beetle in the first place. Most head units can be converted by companies to accept mps players whilst leaving the unit facia untouched. I have a fair stack of blaupunkts in a selection of states....one of my things is having a radio backlight not matching the dash lighting. I cannot abide the 'look' of a silver halfords all singing all dancing head unit in a black dash when the factory unit has been 'upgraded' , whatever the vehicle.

Just bought a pair of these to mount up in the syncro (somewhere) along with some Blaupunkt 100mm speakers, there's no way I'm cutting virgin door cards!

I hope that this thing's got an aux input so that I can hook up an MP3 or DAB ...

To think that I just binned all my old tapes :( and the syncro's not got an aerial fitted either

Type in retro car radio on Amazon, the look of 70's 80's ,Around £200 but much better quality than an outdated underpowered system . Image
