How much roughly would a compression test cost
Hello.Really need to get to the bottom of the blue smoke coming out of the van. From what i have been reading its a possibility that its the piston rings. So we need to start thr process of elimination.Thought doing a compression test would be a good place to start ????

Cheap enough on bay to pick one up.
Pull out a plug, screw this in and chug away for a few seconds. A fairly simple test to undertake yourself

Ditto that... Buying a gauge will be less than the hours labour a garage will charge you.... And you can sell it again after!
in too deep to quit now....
Re: How much roughly would a compression test cost
^^^^^ Ditto what they say.
A gauge is much cheaper than even half an hour of a mechanic's time. If you have your own gauge you can do a compression check again whenever you need, and it's a really useful diagnostic tool. One thing to remember when you use it: Make sure that the engine is warmed up and the throttle is wide open as you are cranking, otherwise you'll get misleading readings.

He did say in his earlier post here (although it took a bit of detective work to find it

Earlier post linky
But you're right that a diesel compression check is a very different story, using much more expensive tools.
