Starter motor noise

Post by aec »

Some time ago I needed to replace my starter motor. The new one is great - most of the time. Spins fast and starts the engine almost instantly. But every now and again, I turn the key and the get a grinding noise as the motor tries to turn the engine over. I replaced the bush (again) just in case but it made no difference. It's been like this for a while, and I've got used to trying a few times when this happens til the motor spins properly.

The old starter was slow and eventually the solenoid packed up, but it never did what this one does. Any ideas what it could be?

Bump. I'm curious about this one.
Why would the glass be anything other than half full?

if the old motor did not do it, then to me it suggests a motor problem.
if the dog doesn't mesh with the ring then it will grind.
maybe the dog is a different profile to the old one?
